Compliance news that matters to you

Hello and welcome to Allocca Enterprises second quarter 2007 electronic newsletter. Thank you to all of you who have either attended one of my training programs, allowed me to provide an in-house training at your facility or who has taken advantage of the compliance audit & consulting services. Having learned so much from each of you either from a class or from visiting your facilities, now it is time I share some of those best practices back with you.

Tips Corner

Top 3 things to get started on your Import Compliance program;

1. Get management commitment, preferably a “C” level executive, and have them put it in writing. It can say something to the effect of, it is the companies polices and procedures to comply with all U.S. Customs & Border Protection Regulations.

2. Lookup and verify that you are using an up-to-date and accurate Harmonized Tariff Number (HTS) on www.cbp.gov . Create a product database, and list the proper HTS Classification Number next to each product you import. Work with a licensed customs broker and together find your accurate HTS code. If unable to find one, consider going to U.S. Customs (CBP) to get a binding ruling prior to importing.

3. Any good import compliance program must be in writing. Make it customized to your import process, start by listing who is responsible, their back-up’s and what are your internal import procedures. The hardest part is getting started.
